What is an Engineered Septic System?

An engineered septic system is a system that is specifically designed by a licensed engineer based on local site conditions and soil type. In Teller and Park County, engineered systems are the most common due to the rocky soils, decomposed granite, shallow bedrock, and limited usable space.

Because the native rocky soils do not allow the effluent enough time to be properly treated before it returns to the groundwater system, an Engineered system with a sand filter allows more time for the natural treatment process, while the pump inside the septic tank allows for even distribution over the sand filter. These designs help protect groundwater and meet county and state regulations.

Can you fix an old or failing septic system?

If a system has been tested, inspected, and deemed to be insufficient for the current use, or if the leach field has been found to be at the end of it's life cycle, a replacement system or upgrade may be required. This creates additional challenges, as a new leach field cannot be excavated and installed where the old one was and must be placed in a new location that meets all setback requirements from property lines, and existing infrastructure such as a well or cistern. Peak DirtWorks has helped many homeowners navigate this process to determine the best course of action and ensure a safe and effective solution moving forward.

Do septic installations or repairs require a permit in Teller County / Park County?

Yes. Septic system installations, replacements, and many repairs require permits and inspections through the local county public health department. Inspections are required before backfill to ensure the system is installed according to the approved plans. It is also important to establish a history of work completed, as well as to map the location of utilities to avoid any future damage to the area.

Permit requirements vary by county, project scope, and system type. Peak DirtWorks works closely with local health departments and engineers to help ensure septic projects are completed in compliance with applicable regulations.

How much does a septic system cost in the mountains?

Almost all systems installed here in Teller and Park County are Engineered Septic Systems, the cost of which can vary based on site conditions, access, soil and rock, system design.

The average cost of a 2-3 bedroom Engineered Septic System is in the $35,000-$40,000 range. This includes all standard labor and materials, including septic tank, pump, sand, and plumbing components.  If the area requires blasting, larger equipment or bigger leach field due to rocky soils, additional costs will be incurred. If the property does not require an Engineered system, then average cost will be more in the $25,000-range, depending on number of bedrooms and type of soil, and location.
